Perceptions and Beliefs: How They Shape Our Lives

In therapy, one of the key tasks is to unravel the beliefs we've developed about the world around us.

These beliefs are usually formed during our developmental years and they act as the lens as to which we navigate the world. A map if you would. This internal map of ours influences our decisions and the quality of our lives in very deep and profound ways.

Sometimes these beliefs serve us well, but other times they can hold us back or even harm us. Take the belief that 'asking for help is a sign of weakness.' While this might have been useful in a fiercely independent family, it could prevent someone from seeking support when they're struggling with mental health issues.

The "Not Good Enough" Belief

Consider Sarah, a talented interior designer who dreams of starting her own freelance business. However, she holds a deep-seated belief that she's not good enough to succeed on her own. This belief originated from childhood experiences of feeling like she never got things right, what she knew was not enough or perfect. Despite her skills and creativity, Sarah hesitates to take the leap into entrepreneurship, convinced that she needs more qualifications and experience before she can launch her business.

Challenge Your Beliefs: Learning as You Go

But what if Sarah could challenge these self-limiting beliefs? What if she reframed her perceptions? Instead of waiting for the perfect moment or qualifications, she could start her journey with what she has, learning and growing along the way. Sarah would also be reminded that making mistakes is part of the journey.

The "Not Good Enough" Belief **UPDATED**

Sarah decides to challenge her belief that she's not good enough to start her own business. She begins by taking small steps, such as creating a portfolio of her work and reaching out to potential clients. With each project, Sarah gains confidence in her abilities and learns valuable lessons about entrepreneurship. Over time, she realizes that she doesn't need to be perfect to succeed—she just needs to be brave enough to try.

Conclusion: Embracing Growth and Possibility

In the end, our perceptions and beliefs shape the trajectory of our lives. By challenging self-limiting beliefs and embracing a mindset of growth and possibility, we can unlock our full potential and create the life we desire. So, the next time you find yourself held back by a belief that is not serving you anymore, take a pause and redirect. Redirect to the life that fulfills you.
